Industrialization and modernization since the nineteenth century extended and increased Europe’s material demand. Industrial production and transport systems allowed materials to be acquired, processed, consumed, and disposed at geographical distinct and distant places. In these different places it created local economies. In this workshop we explore how in different places this affected well-being and environmental developments. The contributions view the local development in connection with the transnational and globalizing development.
